In this episode, Laura Humm sits down for an Ask Me Anything session with author Julie Catherine. They talk about using different plot frameworks across a series, how a character grows across a series, points of view in a romance, how to distinguish differing points of view, how character growth arcs impact the plot of the romance, and more.

Hi Laura,
I enjoyed listening to you and Julie talk about all things romance. The discussion helped clarify for me the challenge I have when attempting to write romance. I’m discovering that I don’t care to write enemies-to-friends stories, or where the couple starts out the story well, then not, and then they make their way back to each other. As you and Julie talked, I thought of Hart to Hart, the TV series. I know that the backdrop was the crimes they solved, but as I remember it, what has primarily stuck with me is the romance between the two of them. I think I will try my hand at this type of romantic style writing—one in which the romantic relationship starts out solid.
I asked ChatGPT for some book series titles similar to the style of Hart to Hart: The Spenser Series by Robert B. Parker, The Innkeeper Chronicles by Ilona Andrews, and The Beekeeper’s Apprentice by Laurie R. King. Laura, please let me know if you know any others.
Julie, I wish you success in your writing!
